What is Form 7004?

Form 7004 is the IRS form used by S Corporations, C Corporations, Partnerships, estates, and trusts to request an automatic six-month extension to file their federal tax returns. The form has two parts: Part I identifies the return type by code, and Part II calculates the estimated tax balance due by the original deadline. Filing Form 7004 eliminates the failure-to-file penalty during the extension period but does not extend the payment due date for taxes owed. Businesses can lower their estimated payment through Depreciation and amortization deductions applied before the extended deadline.
