What is Form 1040-X?
Form 1040-X is the official IRS document that taxpayers file to amend a previously submitted federal income tax return, correcting filing status, reported income, deductions, and credits. The form uses a three-column format displaying original amounts, net changes, and corrected figures for each line item. Taxpayers must include a written explanation for every change in Part III. The IRS accepts electronic filing for the current and two prior tax years. Amendments must be filed within three years of the original return date. Strategic use of Form 1040-X recovers missed Tax loss harvesting benefits.
