What is Form 1040?
Form 1040, officially titled U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, is the primary federal tax form that individual taxpayers use to file their annual income tax returns with the IRS, reporting all sources of income, claiming deductions and credits, and calculating their final tax liability or refund. The form includes sections for wages from W-2 forms, investment income from 1099 forms, business income, retirement distributions, and other income sources, along with spaces to claim the standard deduction or itemized deductions and various tax credits like the Child & dependent tax credits. Taxpayers can file Form 1040 electronically or by mail, with most returns due by April 15 of the following year.
